Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has authorised the temporary presence of foreign military personnel, including those from Russia, in the country for humanitarian purposes. This follows a decree by the head of state published in the authorities’ official newspaper La Gaceta on June 8.

In addition to Russia, troops, naval and air vessels of the armed forces of Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico and the United States will still be allowed into Nicaragua for the purpose of exchange and humanitarian aid.

It is pointed out that such authorisation will be in force in the second half of this year.

Russian military will be able to take part in humanitarian exercises, search and rescue in emergencies and natural disasters, as well as exercises to combat crime at sea in the waters of Nicaragua, the decree clarifies.

Earlier, on June 5, it became known that the U.S. administration had made a final decision not to invite the Venezuelan, Cuban and Nicaraguan authorities to the Summit of the Americas, which takes place in Los Angeles from 6 to 10 June. In connection with this, the presidents of Mexico, Bolivia and Honduras have refused to attend the summit.

Earlier, on 1 May, the president of Nicaragua said that Russia, while carrying out a special operation to protect Donbas, was fighting against the Nazis who, with the support of European countries and the USA, seized power in Kiev and murdered its citizens.
