Former National Security Agency (NSA) employee Edward Snowden commented on obtaining Russian citizenship on September 26.

“After waiting two years and almost 10 years in exile, some stability will have a positive effect on my family. I am praying for privacy for them and for us all,” Snowden wrote on Twitter in response to his 2020 post that he had applied for Russian citizenship.

Snowden lives in Russia with his wife Lindsay. The couple had a daughter in 2020, who was granted Russian citizenship by birthright.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting Snowden Russian citizenship. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that Russian citizenship was granted to the American at his request.

In addition, the American’s lawyer in Russia, Anatoly Kucherena, said that Snowden’s wife would also apply for Russian citizenship.

At the same time, the head of the State Department’s press service, Ned Price, said that Snowden, despite receiving Russian citizenship, remained a US citizen and had to face US justice.
