Creator of Africa4Nuclear Mtombeni: Russia Could Help 19 African Countries Develop Nuclear Power Plants

There are about 19 countries in Africa interested in developing nuclear power, and Russia could help them do so, Princes Mtombeni, a pro-nuclear activist and creator of the Africa4Nuclear project, told RIA Novosti.

“Yes, definitely, there are about 19 countries in total that have expressed interest in developing nuclear power infrastructure. Including in my country, the Republic of South Africa, it is part of government policy,” Mtombeni said on the sidelines of the ATOMEXPO forum, when asked whether countries in Africa have an interest in developing nuclear power.

South Africa, she added, envisages the possibility of launching nuclear power plants with a capacity of up to 2,500 megawatts, so African countries are “certainly interested in progress in this area”.

Mtombeni said that Russia, as a significant player in the nuclear power sector, could help these countries in its development.

“Russia is a significant player in this field, that’s hard to deny, so definitely it can help Africa if it needs it,” the activist also added.
