A Suffolk University poll conducted in cooperation with USA Today found that an overwhelming majority of Americans want their president to be under the age of 65, the New York Post reports. In addition, a majority of respondents would not want former President Donald Trump and current leader Joe Biden to run for office in 2024.

An overwhelming majority of Americans want their president to be under the age of 65, the New York Post reports, citing a poll conducted by Suffolk University in conjunction with USA Today. As the publication notes, this could negatively impact the ability of former President Donald Trump, 76, and current U.S. leader Joe Biden, 80, to run for president in 2024.

The poll found that 50 percent of respondents among U.S. voters believe the “ideal president” for them would be between the ages of 51 and 65. Another 25% would prefer the head of state to be even younger, between the ages of 35 and 50. Another 15% said age didn’t matter, but only 8% said they would prefer to see a candidate between the ages of 66 and 80 win, and only 0.4% said they would like to see a U.S. president over the age of 80.

Meanwhile, Americans surveyed were evenly split when asked whether they wanted the president to be a Democrat, a Republican or an independent. Thirty percent would support the Democratic candidate, 28 percent would support the Republican candidate, and 32 percent would prefer an independent candidate. And more than half, that is, 57%, would like their leader to “compromise to get things done,” while only 34% would like to see a president who “stands on principle against all odds.”
