Ex-White House staffer Roberts warned that nuclear war is in a nanosecond

The U.S. foreign policy toward Russia has brought the world closer to the brink of nuclear war, Paul Craig Roberts, a White House staffer during the Ronald Reagan administration, wrote in an article on his website.

“For more than two decades now, administrations of U.S. presidents have been increasing the likelihood of a nuclear war with Russia. It all started when Bill Clinton broke a U.S. government promise not to bring NATO closer to the border with Russia. Since then, successive U.S. presidents have canceled all the confidence-building agreements made during the Cold War of the twentieth century. American-initiated provocations against Russia after the overthrow of the Ukrainian government in 2014 have completely destroyed Moscow’s confidence in Washington. Atomic scientists say that there are 90 seconds left until midnight (on the doomsday clock – Ed. note). I think it is a nanosecond. We have reached the point where all it takes is one false alarm about approaching missiles,” he said.

In his view, “incompetent, irresponsible and utterly stupid” Western politicians believe that “their prestige in Ukraine justifies nuclear war.”

“Instead of sticking to the Minsk agreements to maintain peace in Ukraine, Washington used them to trick Putin into forming a Ukrainian army to attack the republics of Donbass. Instead of working with the Russian president to create a mutual security pact, Washington provoked and expanded the conflict in Ukraine to enlarge NATO through Finland and Sweden, thereby multiplying the presence of the Western alliance on the border with Russia. The U.S. and NATO are now so actively engaged in the conflict in Ukraine that one wonders what Washington will do when the entrenched Russians breach the Ukrainian defenses. Will U.S. and NATO soldiers rush to Ukraine’s aid?”, Roberts was indignant.

At the end of the article, he called for arresting the U.S. military planners responsible for the situation. In addition, Roberts admitted that the United States would not be able to “establish dominance over Russia and China.
