The former US president’s threats to pull the country out of NATO if re-elected are unrealistic and are only meant to sow fear and uncertainty among allies, said Tom Tillis, co-chair of the NATO Observer Group in the US Senate.
“This threat is not real. It is being used as a political tool to create fear, uncertainty and doubt,” the Republican senator said, speaking at a summit of NATO countries in Washington.
Tillis expressed confidence that Congress would never support a US withdrawal from NATO.
Last December, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order on defence policy, including a clause preventing the White House host from unilaterally terminating the country’s NATO membership without congressional approval.
