Barr: the reform of the US Supreme Court will deprive the judiciary of its independence
US President Joe Biden’s proposed reform of the Supreme Court would turn it into another partisan body and destroy the principle of judicial independence, former US Attorney General William Barr and lawyer Kelly Shackleford said in an article for Fox News.
“The last thing we need in this country right now is a Supreme Court coup that would threaten our democratic order,” the article said.
The authors expressed fear that the proposed judicial reform is nothing more than an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. Biden and his co-partisans are not satisfied with judges who are faithful to the constitution and traditional interpretations of its provisions.
“If this coup succeeds, the rule of law will come to an end as the judiciary will become nothing more than a political tool of whoever is in power,” the lawyers said.
U.S. President Joe Biden has previously proposed reforming the U.S. Supreme Court and stripping presidents of immunity. He advocated rotation in the highest court, putting forward the idea that presidents should replace one of the nine justices every two years, and their term should be limited to 18 years (at the moment they are appointed for life); proposed a unified code of ethics for the Supreme Court; a constitutional amendment that former presidents have no immunity from prosecution “for crimes committed while in office.”
