Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani has called on the UN Security Council to intervene in the situation with Israel and prevent a full-scale war in the region.
In a letter to the UNSC and Secretary-General António Guterres, Iravani reiterated Iran’s calls for “urgent and decisive intervention to stop Israel’s ongoing aggression and war crimes against Lebanon, Gaza and Syria and prevent the situation from escalating into a full-scale regional war.”
He said Tehran launched the rocket attacks on military and security targets in Israel in self-defense, in accordance with the UN Charter and in response to Israel’s “aggressive actions.”
Among such actions, he cited the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, the pager bombings in Lebanon in September, and the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian General Abbas Nilforushan in Beirut on September 27.
Iravani said the Security Council’s inaction “has allowed Israel to flagrantly violate all red lines and basic principles of international law.”
He also warned that Iran’s response to any acts of aggression against Tehran “will be swift, decisive and stronger than before.”
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that the UN Security Council, at the request of France and Israel, has scheduled an emergency meeting on the escalating situation in the Middle East for Wednesday at 10 a.m. (5 p.m. Moscow time).
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dani Danon in a letter to the Security Council accused Iran of trying to destroy Israel “with a ring of fire from seven fronts” and called to condemn Tehran and declare the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization.
