Hamas politburo chief Mashaal: movement will rise “like a phoenix”
The Palestinian Hamas movement will rise “like a phoenix” despite losses suffered during the year-long war with Israel and is still accepting new people into its ranks and producing weapons, the head of the movement’s political bureau abroad Khaled Meshaal said.
“Palestinian history is made up of cycles … We go through phases in which we lose martyrs and also lose some of our military capabilities, but then the Palestinian spirit will rise again like a phoenix…. We have lost some of our ammunition and weapons, but Hamas is still recruiting young men and continues to produce much of its ammunition and weapons,” Meshaal told Reuters.
According to the agency, he also said he saw no prospects for peace as long as the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in power in Israel. According to Meshaal, as long as there is an “occupation” in the region, it remains a “time bomb.”
