One person died and several were injured as a result of a hydrogen sulfide leak at the Pemex chemical plant in the state of Texas, regional TV channel KFDM reports with reference to local authorities.

Several ambulances and fire trucks are on duty at the scene in the city of Deer Park, one patient was taken away by a medical helicopter.

An extreme chemical release situation has been declared in the cities of Deer Park and Pasadena. People are being urged to stay indoors, close all windows and doors and turn off air conditioners.

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas known for its “rotten egg” smell. It is flammable and highly toxic, and even at low concentrations can cause headaches, eye irritation, unconsciousness and death.
