Chinese President Xi Jinping begins a state visit to Brazil on Sunday to strengthen mutual political trust and coordination, the Chinese leader will also attend the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, where he will outline his vision for a just world amid a volatile global economy and an uncertain international environment.
Xi Jinping’s current visit to Brazil will be his second in five years, and he will hold talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on bilateral relations, international and regional issues of common interest, and attend a signing ceremony for cooperation documents.
‘China believes that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit will further strengthen mutual political trust between the two sides, enhance the strategic, innovative and leading nature of bilateral relations, strengthen the pairing of development strategies of the two countries, deepen strategic communication and coordination between the two sides on global hotspot issues, and hand in hand usher in the next ‘golden 50 years’ of China-Brazil relations,’ said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
She added that in the past half-century since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the PRC and Brazil, their ties have always maintained healthy and stable development, fruitful practical cooperation in various fields in the face of international changes, becoming a model of unity, cooperation and development for major developing countries, and the overall, strategic and global influence of bilateral relations has continued to grow.
The G20 summit will be held on 18-19 November in Rio de Janeiro. Xi Jinping will deliver a speech at the summit and hold in-depth exchanges with leaders of all countries under the theme of ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’.
The Chinese side has not yet announced with which of the world leaders Xi Jinping plans to meet on the margins of the G20 summit, however, the media reported on possible talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Thus, the publication Stern, citing sources in the German government, earlier reported that Scholz and Xi Jinping on the margins of the summit in Rio de Janeiro will discuss bilateral relations, the Ukrainian and Middle East conflicts.
At the same time, the Bloomberg agency, citing sources, reports that Starmer wants to hold a bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil, and it could be the first personal contact between the British and Chinese leaders in almost seven years. The previous such meeting took place when Britain’s Prime Minister was Theresa May, who paid an official visit to China in early 2018.
According to the agency, the two sides are currently discussing the possibility of a meeting between Starmer and Xi Jinping on the margins of the summit on 18-19 November, but the exact plans have not yet been confirmed, as the politicians’ schedules may not coincide.
