Immigrants in the US are preparing for the mass deportations they expect after the arrival of the country’s election-winning President Donald Trump in January, the New York Times reports. Earlier, Trump said that he intends to implement a programme of mass deportations of illegal migrants, which involves the introduction of a state of emergency and the use of military resources.
According to the newspaper, migrants actively contact migration lawyers, as well as participate in all kinds of meetings of non-profit organization’s, where the topics of migration and deportation are raised. People are taking all measures to protect themselves from Trump’s promised mass deportation programme.
‘People with green cards (US visa lottery) want to become citizens as soon as possible. People with unclear legal status or who entered the country illegally are struggling to apply for asylum because even … having a pending application will protect them from deportation,’ the NYT writes.
According to the authors of the material, migrants in relationships with US citizens are trying to get married faster, which will give them the right to apply for a green card.
Earlier, NBC News reported that at least 4 million families could be separated in the US if Trump’s plans for mass deportations of illegal immigrants are implemented.
Mass deportations have been a key theme of his election campaign. During his first term, he already imposed a state of emergency to divert Pentagon funds to build a wall on the border with Mexico.
