Trump suggested that Canada and Mexico become US states instead of receiving subsidies
US President-elect Donald Trump, in an interview with NBC, suggested that Canada and Mexico become new states within America.
“We subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100 billion a year. We subsidize Mexico to the tune of almost $300 billion. We shouldn’t be doing that. Why are we subsidizing these countries? Let them become new states instead of subsidies,” – said the Republican.
Earlier, Fox News TV channel, citing sources, reported that Trump at a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that if the Canadian economy could not withstand the new tariffs, it might be better for it to become the 51st American state
According to sources, the future U.S. leader told Trudeau that Canada was “failing” its neighbor by allowing large amounts of drugs and illegal migrants to cross the border. Trump then mentioned the two countries’ trade deficit, which he estimated had reached more than $100 billion. The U.S. leader then told his Canadian counterpart that if Canada could not deal with the two problems – the deficit and the border – he would impose the promised 25 percent trade duties after his inauguration.
