Russian submarines of the project 885M ‘Yasen-M’ can suddenly shoot out American subs from a close range, writes the magazine National Interest.

‘Yasen-M is designed for close combat with enemy submarines. These sea monsters are capable of getting close to US or NATO submarines with ultra-silent equipment <…> and then suddenly attacking with their 533-millimetre torpedoes. The same can be said about attacks against surface ships,’ the article says.

Moreover, the publication reminds, Russian submarines have the most powerful missile armament in the form of Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles, and are also capable of carrying the Zirkon hypersonic system. At the same time, it is emphasised that the US is completely incapable of defending itself against hypersonic weapons.

‘The American Navy (and the fleets of NATO allies) completely loses in firepower to the submarines ‘Yasen-M’ of the Russian Northern Fleet’, – summarised in the material.

Project 885 ‘Yasen’ submarines – a series of Russian multipurpose submarines of the fourth generation. The lead ship of the project – nuclear submarine ‘Severodvinsk’ – entered the fleet in 2014. Starting with the second boat in the series, the submarines were built under the modernised Yasen-M project. Currently, there is one Project 885 submarine and four Project 885M ships in service.
