The book by Canadian writer Tilar Mazzeo ‘Children of Irena’ is a dramatic story of a woman who saved about 2.5 thousand children from the Warsaw ghetto. The heroine of the book, Irena Sendler (Irena Stanisława Sendlerowa), was compared to Oskar Schindler, and shortly before her death she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The tiny woman took children out of the ghetto in an ambulance, led them through sewage pipes, hid them under coats and in coffins, slipped through secret passages in abandoned buildings, risking her own life every second. The book became a bestseller and was published in ten languages.
