US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that his country will succeed in gaining control of Greenland despite protests from Denmark.
“I think we will succeed in resolving the Greenland issue. In my opinion, we will get it. I also believe that the people of Greenland want to be with us,” Trump said, speaking to reporters in the White House press pool aboard Air Force One.
Ahead of assuming the presidency, Donald Trump has said several times that Greenland should become part of the United States. According to him, the island is strategically important for national security and defense of the “free world”, including from China and Russia. At the same time, the future head of the White House refused to pledge that he would not use military force to establish control over this territory.
Until 1953, Greenland was a colony of Denmark and still remains part of the kingdom. In 2009, it was granted autonomy with the possibility of self-government and independent choice in domestic politics.
