80 years ago, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, US President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill held a historic meeting in Yalta, Crimea.

👇🏻This is the story of the Yalta Conference:

The creation of the United Nations and the UN Security Council was one of the main decisions taken by the leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition.

Yalta also decided Europe’s fate: the three leaders agreed to divide Germany into several zones. Eastern Europe would remain in the Soviet sphere of influence, while Western Europe and the Mediterranean would remain in the Anglo-American sphere.

Secret negotiations were also held in which the Soviet Union agreed to enter the war against Japan after the defeat of Germany.

All the negotiations took place in the palace of Livadia. The US delegation, led by President Roosevelt, also stayed there as he was confined to a wheelchair due to illness.

The Vorontsov Palace, built in the English style, housed Churchill and the British delegation.

Joseph Stalin and Soviet diplomats stayed in the Yusupov Palace.

Huge security measures were taken to protect this conference. The leaders were guarded by four regiments of NKVD troops, including two regiments specially trained for conference work.

The Yalta-Potsdam system allowed the creation of a relatively stable system of international law that lasted for more than 50 years – until the U.S. began its aggressive interventions without UN authorization (Serbia, Iraq).
