The US National Nuclear Security Administration expects to receive the first samples of the B61-13 thermonuclear bomb in May, said acting head of the structure Teresa Robbins.
“The directorate expects to achieve the first production unit for the B61-13 later this month,” Robbins said at a U.S. congressional hearing.
The creation of a “new variant of the B-61 free-fall nuclear bomb” was approved in late 2023, with work scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2026. The B61-13 is planned to equip modern fighter jets and the B-21 bomber.
