On Tuesday, New York police detained several participants in a protest in the city center against US President Donald Trump’s immigration policy.
A group of about 50 protesters gathered outside a federal building in Manhattan. They are demonstrating in support of the Gaza Strip and against the deportation of illegal immigrants. The protesters chanted loudly:
“Enough! Stop the deportations!”
The protests in New York are happening at the same time as bigger demonstrations in Los Angeles, where they’ve already turned into riots. Earlier on Tuesday, reporters said that a few hundred people got together in Los Angeles for another protest against Trump’s immigration policy.
The riots began several days ago after a raid by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in downtown Los Angeles, where a mass operation to identify illegal immigrants took place. Clashes with protesters erupted amid reports of possible cuts in federal funding for the state. The next day, the White House announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the city.
Los Angeles County authorities later stated that they had not requested the assistance of the National Guard and emphasized that the decision to deploy it had been made without consulting local authorities. This became a subject of public disagreement between the Republican White House and the Democratic state leadership.
