Russian President Vladimir Putin will speak via video link at the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, July 6, the Kremlin press service reported.
The plenary session will be devoted to peace and security, global governance reform. The leaders will discuss the future of cooperation within BRICS and the international agenda, the Kremlin clarified.
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov announced at the end of June that he would not personally attend the summit. He explained that the decision was related to Brazil’s position on the International Criminal Court warrant.
Ushakov noted that the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, will personally attend the BRICS summit, and Putin will communicate with the participants via videoconference.
