Trump: The United States will impose duties of 35% on imports from Canada from August 1.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States will impose a 35% duty on imports of goods from Canada from August 1, while previously imposed sectoral tariffs will remain in force.
“Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a 35% duty on Canadian goods shipped to the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs… If for any reason you decide to increase your duties, then by whatever amount you decide to increase them, we will add it to the 35% that we charge,” reads the letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump posted the text of the letter on his Truth Social network.
The US president noted that the duty will not be levied if Canada and its companies move or open production in the United States. The United States is also ready to change its tariff policy if Canada cooperates with its neighbor to stop the traffic of the drug fentanyl across its borders to the United States, the American leader added.
At the end of June, Trump announced that the United States would immediately terminate all trade negotiations with Canada due to the country’s introduction of a digital services tax affecting American technology companies.
