Politico: Acting head of NASA Duffy to announce plans to build a reactor on the Moon

The US Secretary of Transportation, acting director of NASA, Sean Duffy, will announce plans this week to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon, Politico newspaper reported, citing documents and officials.

Duffy will announce accelerated plans this week to build a nuclear reactor on the moon.

According to the documents, NASA discussed plans to build a reactor on the surface of the Moon, and it is planned to set clearer deadlines for this, the newspaper writes.

A senior NASA official told the newspaper that these actions are being taken to “win the second space race.”

According to the newspaper, Duffy also proposed a directive for a faster replacement of the ISS.

The reactor directive directs NASA to request proposals from industry to launch a 100 kilowatt nuclear reactor by 2030, the publication points out. The directive also states that the first country to have a reactor on the Moon can “declare a restricted zone that will significantly deter the United States.” The publication adds that this is a sign of NASA’s concern about the plans of Russia and China.
