U.S. Attorney General Bondi said 68 people were arrested overnight in Washington.
Overnight, 68 people were arrested in Washington as part of federal anti-crime measures, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said on the social network X.
“More than 300 arrests in Washington — and the number is growing: last night alone, our federal partners and law enforcement agencies in the District of Columbia made 68 arrests and seized 15 illegal firearms,” she wrote.
At the same time, persons suspected of murder, drug dealers and other offenders were charged.
Last Monday, US President Donald Trump announced several measures to combat crime in Washington:
• Local police are coming under the direct control of the federal government;
• The National Guard is heading to the capital;
• The armed forces can also be sent there, if necessary.
Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that the National Guard forces will arrive in Washington in the coming weeks and will stay there as long as the head of state requires.
In response to the president’s measures, residents of the city regularly go out to spontaneous protests.
