The United States and Hungary have signed a memorandum on the peaceful atom, under which Budapest will purchase $114 million worth of American nuclear fuel, the US State Department said.
“The United States and Hungary have signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy… Hungary has expressed its intention to support the creation of up to 10 small modular reactors with a preliminary cost of $ 20 billion,” the statement said.
The contract for the supply of American nuclear fuel is estimated at 114 million dollars, the ministry added.
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the agreement would affect Hungary’s possible purchases of nuclear fuel and spent fuel storage technologies from the United States — Budapest intends to purchase American materials for reactors for the first time in the history of atomic development. The agreement concerns the introduction by Hungary of US technologies that will allow the safe storage of spent fuel on the territory of the Paks NPP, as well as the construction of small modular reactors.
