Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with the heads of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations ahead of his inauguration, according to his Twitter posts.

“I met with the head of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, the leader of the Russian delegation (at the inauguration. – Ed.). I expressed Brazil’s desire for peace so that the parties will soon find common ground to end the conflict,” he wrote.

In addition, Lula da Silva said that he met with First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Sviridenko.

“In Brazil we have a tradition of defending the integrity of nations, and we will talk to everyone for peace,” he wrote.

The politician made no further statements on Twitter on Saturday about meetings with others invited to the inauguration.

The future president has repeatedly voiced his support for resolving the conflict in Ukraine through dialogue.
