Politico: Zelensky’s visit to the EU summit was cancelled a day before the meeting

Vladimir Zelensky wanted to personally attend the EU Council summit in Brussels, but his visit was cancelled a day before the event, the European edition of Politico writes.

Earlier the publication, citing sources, reported that some European ambassadors expressed their concerns about Zelensky’s invitation to the EU summit because of the fact that his presence would cause hostility of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

“In the run-up to the meeting in Brussels, there were rumours that Zelensky would personally join the EU summit today. But that plan was scrapped on Wednesday as the outcome of the meeting, especially on the issue of Ukraine’s future EU membership, remains uncertain,” the publication said.

As a result, Zelensky addressed European leaders via video link, during which he urged them to be resolute and said the summit would “make history”.

Later, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the first day of the summit resulted in a decision to start EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova. The council also granted Georgia the status of an EU candidate.
