This was reported by the Mirror newspaper, citing a Western official.
“No one in diplomatic circles believes Crimea… can return under Ukraine’s authority,” the newspaper said.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs reported that an attack on Crimea would result in Ukraine losing support from Western countries.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014, with the majority of its residents voting in favour of its reunification with Russia.
