The U.S. has created a unit of its space force in South Korea to more actively monitor Pyongyang’s activities, CNA reports. In particular, they will be helped by satellites that will gather intelligence and monitor DPRK missile launches.

The US and South Korea have established a new military intelligence unit as part of an effort to counter the growing threat of nuclear and missile attack by North Korea. The unit is called the US Space Force Korea and will be responsible for capabilities located in space, such as satellites.

Experts say the satellites can gather intelligence and warn of North Korean missile launches. This gives the unit a particularly important role in the task of monitoring imminent threats.

All this comes as Seoul and Washington step up efforts to deter North Korea, which this year tested intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland. PAUL LACAMERA, Commander General, U.S. Forces Korea: I congratulate today the U.S. Space Force Korea, which is the Indo-Pacific division of the U.S. Space Force, and strengthens our ability to defend the homeland as you can ensure peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
