WP: bicentennial hegemony of West will end by 2040 with a sharp increase in GDP of India and China

Bicentennial hegemony of the West may end by 2040 with a significant increase in GDP of China and India. This suggestion was made on April 25 by The Washington Post columnist Henry Olsen.

According to him, the dominance of Western countries in the world was based on economic power. But the GDP ratio of states that have now imposed sanctions on Russia has fallen from 79.4 percent in 2000 to 60.4 percent in 2020.

“By 2040, China and India together will have more GDP by purchasing power than the U.S. and the eight largest countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia combined. Add to that the developing powers: Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and Turkey. Then the balance of power in the world changes even more. This development will end the bicentennial hegemony of the West, unless one of these rising powers joins it,” Olsen believes.

As the journalist noted, China and India did not go along with the demands of Western countries and refused to impose anti-Russian sanctions because of the rapid economic development. For the same reason, Beijing and New Delhi abstained during the vote on UN resolutions condemning Moscow’s special operation to protect Donbass.

“The West has been the world leader for two centuries. If we do not adapt to the situation and prepare for the future, today’s collective Russian response could be a swan song for the West,” the columnist concluded.
