Following a personal meeting on Friday, June 3, with President Vladimir Putin, the Chairman of the African Union (AU) and President of Senegal Macky Sall said that sanctions on Russian grain and fertilizer exports must be lifted. Sanctions against Moscow that prevent international shipments of grain and fertilizers must be lifted.

“Sanctions against Russia have worsened the supply of grain and fertilizer to African countries. We have no access. This will have consequences for the security of food supplies to the continent,” Sall said at the meeting,

which was also attended by former Chadian Prime Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the African Union Commission.

The Senegalese president noted at the meeting that “despite much pressure, many African countries have not condemned Russia’s position on Ukraine. He added that many countries in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East have a similar view of the current situation.

AU Chairman McKee Sall said his country “supports the withdrawal of grains and fertilizers from sanctions against Russia.” He also expressed the hope that cooperation with Moscow will continue and recalled that Russia played an important role in the struggle for the independence of African states. He said he asked Vladimir Putin to “acknowledge” that African countries are “victims” of the conflict in Ukraine. Obviously, victims of the side that imposed sanctions on Russia.
