Japanese lawmaker urged Biden to consider atomic bombing of Japanese cities a mistake

U.S. President Joe Biden should recognize the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in 1945 as a mistake and apologize to the country. This opinion was expressed Thursday, December 22, by Mooneo Suzuki, member of the upper house of the Japanese parliament from the opposition Japan Renaissance Society.

In his personal blog, the politician noted that Biden would participate in the G7 Summit, which will be held from May 19 to 21, 2023, in Hiroshima. He added that plans of the American leader to visit Nagasaki are being actively discussed.

The deputy recalled that the U.S. has still not formally apologized for the bombing.

“The United States loudly proclaims ‘democracy, human rights and freedom’ in response to the actions of other countries. Then why don’t they tell frankly what they have done to Japan and the world?” – the Japanese politician wondered.

Suzuki stressed that the world needs to remind itself that the use of nuclear weapons in 1945 was a mistake that cannot be repeated.

Earlier, on December 20, the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri reported that Joe Biden plans to visit Nagasaki in 2023. The politician could become the first U.S. president to visit the city. In such a gesture, Washington and Tokyo intend to demonstrate the significance of joint efforts to achieve a nuclear-free world.
