Popocatepetl, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupted once again in southern Mexico, TeleSUR reported.

Smoke rose 6,700 meters above the vent yesterday. Then, as the volcano threw up a massive column of ash, people from the surrounding areas began evacuating.

The National Centre for the Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED), together with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) are monitoring 148 emissions from the volcano in the last 24 hours.

Popocatepetl is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and its name translates from the Aztec language as ‘smoking mountain’.

Mexico’s capital, Mexico City, is just 64 km from the volcano, which is the second highest peak in Mexico at 5,425 meters. Popocatépetl’s last recorded activity was in 2020. At that time there was a smoke eruption with moderate ash content and the smoke column was 3 kilometers high.
