Huffpost: US refused to support Ukraine’s anti-Russian resolution at the UN

The USA has refused to support Ukraine’s resolution in the UN General Assembly on the “atrocities” of the Soviet Union during the Second World War, the Huffington Post has reported.

According to the publication, in autumn Ukraine’s mission to the UN asked its US colleagues to help promote the resolution, which, according to Kiev, was designed to highlight “Russia’s historic opposition to the rights of Ukrainians”.

“The US gave the answer: now is not the right time,” the publication said.

According to the publication, the proposal was rejected for “unclear reasons”. However, according to an unnamed US official, whose words are quoted by HuffPost, US support for Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip prevents them from upholding the principles of humanitarian law in the rest of the issues.

“This is the price of our unilateral policy (in the Gaza Strip. – Ed.),” the official explained.

Earlier, the US vetoed the UAE’s draft resolution in the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages. Thirteen UNSC members voted in favour of the resolution. The US opposed it and the UK abstained. It was co-sponsored by 97 UN member states.

This is not the first time the US has blocked a resolution preventing Israel’s military plans in the Palestinian enclave. Washington vetoed Brazil’s draft resolution on 18 October. That document, among other things, called on Israel to withdraw the order to Gazans to move to the south of the Strip. At the time, the United States explained its action by the absence of any reference to Israel’s right to self-defence.
