FA: Biden will be denied a request to Riyadh on oil production and sanctions against Russia

During the supposed visit of U.S. President Joe Biden to Saudi Arabia, the American leader will not be able to convince the country to increase oil production and impose sanctions on Russia. That’s what columnist Daliah Dassa Kaye wrote in her piece for Foreign Affairs magazine.

She believes that Biden’s decision to “pay his respects” to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud is a mistaken decision for him as he would return home empty-handed, thus causing very tangible reputational damage.

“This visit should never have been planned at all,” Dalia Dassa Kaye noted.

She is convinced that Riyadh will not tear up relations with Russia for the sake of increasing oil production and will generally take into account personal interests that do not involve reducing global demand for the resource.

“One can hardly expect that visits from U.S. top officials or multibillion-dollar arms sales will help drive a wedge in Riyadh’s relations with China and Russia, given their active development in recent years,” the FA article says.

The author believes that Middle Eastern leaders will not change their decision not to impose sanctions on Russia because of the special operation in Ukraine.

The day before, Biden admitted that he will soon pay a visit to Saudi Arabia, but, according to him, final plans have not yet been formed.
