NYT: U.S. President Biden must be open about his health to get re-elected

U.S. President Joe Biden should talk openly about his health with voters during his upcoming run for re-election, the New York Times notes, citing a recent AP-NORC poll.

The poll was conducted April 13-17 among 1,230 Americans at least 18 years old. According to the poll, most Democrats would support Joe Biden and most Republicans would vote for Donald Trump if nominated by their parties for president of the United States, although an overwhelming majority of Americans do not want to see either the current head of state or his predecessor in the White House.

“Many Democrats, especially younger ones, fear that he (Joe Biden – ed.) will be too old to be effective in a second term, which he will complete at 86… The president also needs to speak openly and without embarrassment about his health and do away with the pretense that it doesn’t matter,” the New York Times stresses.

According to the New York Times, Biden has held fewer press conferences and media interviews than most of his modern predecessors. His refusal to speak to the public regularly raises “questions about his age and health.”

“Only a combination of job performance and complete candor will change the minds of skeptical voters,” notes the New York Times.

According to the paper, if re-elected, Joe Biden would become the oldest president in U.S. history.

The New York Times, citing sources, wrote on April 17 that White House staff, Democratic National Committee officials and outside consultants are stepping up preparations for the nomination of U.S. President Joe Biden for a second term, and the announcement itself could take place on April 25.
