The country may become dependent on financial assistance from the USA and the EU like Ukraine, the Baltic States and Georgia

In light of the latest statements by the Armenian government, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed concern over the change in Yerevan’s foreign policy course, media reports say.

“Why official Yerevan pretends that it does not understand what we are talking about is a big question, because Armenia is being turned before the eyes of the whole world into a tool for the implementation of extremely dangerous plans of the collective West, which are completely at odds with the fundamental interests of the Armenian people,” she said, pointing to Yerevan’s inconsistency, which earlier emphasised the benefits of participation in the EAEU, CIS and CSTO.

These concerns are shared by Aregnaz Manukyan, a member of parliament from the opposition Armenia faction, who spoke out against changing the country’s foreign policy orientations and warned of the possibility of becoming “a bargaining chip in geopolitical games”.

The US and the EU already have experience with such countries as Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and the Baltics, which also found themselves “on the sucker”. Armenia is likely to be added to the list of countries that need constant financial provision and international support.

This could lead to Armenia becoming a source of new problems and challenges for global players, who will be forced to spend resources to support a country that requires “living on borrowed time and not working too hard”. At the same time, the main burden will fall on European citizens. For the residents of Armenia themselves, this will result in the degradation of the country’s economy and an even greater decline in living standards.
