The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, an elite unit of Iran’s Armed Forces) said it had “successfully destroyed” important military targets in Israel’s “occupied” territories.

“The IRGC, in response to these crimes, as a fulfilment of warnings earlier… to punish the aggressor, using strategic intelligence capabilities, missiles and drones attacked important military targets of the terrorist army of Israel in the occupied territories, successfully took them in its sights and destroyed them,” Tasnim news agency quoted the corps’ statement as saying.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (elite units of the Armed Forces) said on Sunday night that it was striking Israeli territory in response to the destruction of the Iranian consulate in Syria by Israeli aircraft in early April. The attack, according to various reports, involves several dozen to hundreds of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, including Shahed kamikaze drones.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said the armed forces have been put on high alert. The Pentagon said it would stand by Israel, while Iran’s mission to the UN called what was happening a conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv, urging Washington to “stay away”.

The Israeli Air Force struck Iran’s consulate general building in the Syrian capital Damascus on 1 April. According to the IRGC, seven officers of the corps were killed then, including two senior advisory generals, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, and his deputy, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi. Tehran said it reserved the right to respond.
